Infra Games. Senator Portman went on CNBC yesterday to actually sell the infrastructure bill, the bipartisan version. Everything that is happening right now is a shellgame of DC disfunction but on Monday (per Portman), the bill will move forward in the Senate. Another comment by Portman caught my attention, he seemed to indicate that the reconciliation bill was a done deal as well, “they [democrats] were always going to do a reconciliation bill” was the sentiment of his statement.
A New Platform. Carlyle Group is out with a new infrastructure platform, led by two former sPower/AES executives. The platform is going to market with an acquisition of development pipeline from Tenaska in partnership with Birch Infrastructure. Late last year, Carlyle also invested in Amp Energy.
Get Paid To Spend. The biggest reason that the utility model is outdated and broken is that it doesn’t align the consumer with the monopoly. Whether it’s a delayed and over budget nuclear plant or the desire to rebuilt the wires infrastructure, shareholders don’t view this as an investment into good business, spending money is a guarantee of profits regardless of how well the job is done or whether it’s done at all as long as the investment goes into the rate base.
